VIDEO CASSETTE RECORDER (VCR)

JVC S-VHS VCR

VCR Background

Still have one of these old relics? There should be no problem connecting a VCR (Video Cassette Recorder) to your home theater network since most receivers have numerous standard definition video inputs. Just keep in mind the resolution difference as well as the lower picture quality. Try to stay with a S–VHS (Super–Video Home System) which has 400 lines of resolution instead of a standard VCR which has 240 lines of resolution.

VCR Tips

  • Wondering what to do with your large collection of VHS movies? Unfortunately, there is not much you can do to make 240 lines of VHS resolution look good on a 720 or 1080 lines of resolution HDTV. Your best bet is to replace your VCR with a DVD player, HTPC, or DVR.
  • Use S–VHS over regular VHS tapes.
